From 2019-2022 artist Mel Day worked in collaboration with Dr. Akilah Carter-Francique, The Institute for the Study of Sports Society & Social Change and affinity partners to invite hundreds of fans to sing FEELING GOOD—the song made famous by Nina Simone—as an expanding video and choral ensemble and call to action for women’s sport and a more equitable, racially just community.
‘Feeling Good’ Project launched as a half-time performance at a San José State University Women’s Basketball Game on National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 2020, with the voices of live and remote fans and a hundred SJSU Choir members hidden in the stands. The project grew into a generative series of art and sport events and exhibitions dedicated to amplifying voices in women’s sport who search for equity and joy.
